After believing for many years that all bias and prejudice reflected animus towards groups (such as with a racist), the social scientists discovered a different type of bias—implicit bias. The key take away is that even well-intentioned individuals with their hearts and minds in the right place have implicit biases that can affect perceptions and behavior.
