Government Personnel – Supervisors and Managers

(4 hours, 30 attendees)

This course is designed for government personnel who hold the critical positions of supervisor or manager within their agency. These professionals are tasked with ensuring their agency’s administrative and operational goals are being achieved while delivering fair and impartial services to the communities they serve. This course provides a strong understanding of the science of bias, discusses the negative consequences of biases impacting on decisions and behaviors, and highlights the important role of supervisors and managers in producing fair and impartial decision-making. Participants completing this course will:

  • Understand that even well-intentioned people have biases.
  • Understand how implicit biases impact on our perceptions and behaviors.
  • Understand that fair and impartial behavior produces effective decision-making.

Supervisors and managers will also be able to:

  • Identify subordinate behavior that may be biased–including those well-meaning staff members whose biased behavior may not be consciously produced.
  • Intervene with staff members to thwart biased behavior.
  • Consider how bias might manifest in their own operational and supervisory decision-making.
  • Understand the role policies and practices have in reducing the risk of biased decision-making.

Option: Agency may include our Diversity and Inclusion training module that (1) introduces trainees to these concepts, (2) illustrates how they add value to the workplace, (3) identifies strategies for creating a more inclusive workplace.
